Walk & Roll & more

Walk & Roll to school October 4

Wednesday, October 4 is the annual Walk & Roll to School Day. Many school communities are hosting events. Some include meeting at a spot in the neighborhood and walking or rolling to school from there. Others are just encouraging people to walk or roll to school and then meeting on the playground.

If your school wants to participate and hasn't yet organized anything, it's not too late! You can register and get materials at https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/. See you on the street!

Give your input on middle school

Are you a parent at one of the elementary schools feeding into Cardozo, CHEC, or Francis-Stevens? If so, please take our survey!  This will help with planning around a new DCPS middle school, expected to be built on the former site of Banneker High School at 800 Euclid St NW. Thank you very much!

Attend a facilities plan town hall

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) is conducting three parallel studies, including the a Boundary and Student Assignment Study to review DC Public School (DCPS) boundaries and feeder patterns and District-wide public school student assignment policies, and a Master Facilities Plan study to review school building capacities and needs.

This week, they are holding virtual town hall meetings to get input from members of the community on the Master Facilities Plan project:

Participants will review updated programmatic capacities and draft recommendations supporting the three goals of the MFP; ensuring school facilities are efficiently utilized, ensuring every student is enrolled in a modern state of the art facility and, ensuring every student's daily experience is in a well-maintained facility. Both town hall sessions will cover the same information.

Testify on a bill about work orders

Has your school ever had a work order closed, but the work wasn't actually done? If so, please sign up to testify at the DC Council's October 12 hearing on Bill 25-218, the “Work Order Integrity Amendment Act of 2023.”

The stated purpose of this bill "is to require that the DGS Facilities Management division receive affirmative approval from a school-level staff member before marking maintenance or repair requests as complete in the Department’s internal work order system. The hearing will also cover school readiness including a review of the start of school year 2023-24 and preparations for this year’s cold season."

The hearing will be virtual (for public witnesses, DGS will participate in person) at 11 am on Thursday, October 12. The deadline to register is Tuesday, October 10 at 5 pm. The Council has developed a new Hearing Management System to manage signups and testimony, so use this link to register and submit a written copy of your testimony in advance.
